No matter which resort you end up staying at, you’ll be introduced to a variety of exciting adventures. Listed below, you’ll find a few of the most entertaining winter activities that Hecla Island have to offer.

1) Ice Fishing –

Lake Winnipeg is a national treasure and one of the best places to go for an authentic ice fishing experience. Lake Winnipeg is filled with fascinating fish such as the Rainbow Trout, the Channel Catfish, the Burbot, and the Lake Whitefish. If you’ve never spent time ice fishing before, make sure to communicate with a local outfitter. Novice anglers will want to make sure that they have some sort of guide with them on their journey, as ice fishing can be both difficult and dangerous when not properly practiced. You’ll want to make sure that you at least have an ice fishing tent, an ice fishing auger, warming supplies, and your ice fishing rod.

2) Cross-Country Skiing –

If you are feeling too anxious to sit on the lake, consider strapping on your cross-country skis. While Hecla Island gets quite cold in the winter, your eyes will sparkle with more than the chill when you see the natural wonder of Hecla Island. At Gull Harbour Marina, you’ll be able to find your way to all of the cross-country equipment and trail information that you need. We heartily suggest wearing a scarf, a facemask, and some gloves during your journey.

3) Northern Lights Viewing –

Did you know that Hecla Island is a wonderful place to catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis? If you want to see the northern lights, make sure you head up to Hecla Island at some point between January and March. You can rent a heated vehicle or hike via snowshoes to the perfect viewing spots. Like ice fishing, there is no guarantee that you’ll catch sight of the aurora borealis. If you do, however, it will be a sight that you never forget.
